Welcome! Six Groups make up the Sierra Club Grand Canyon Chapter. Conservation, political and legislative activism, administrative work, and outings are a few ways we work to protect this amazing state. And there are many more! All the events and meetings listed below are open to members interested in learning more about the Sierra Club. We aim to make this world a better, more livable place. We need your help!

Chapter Announcements

MAY 5 and JUN 5 (MON) 5:30 p.m. Political Committee meetings. Meet at the Sierra Club's Phoenix office. If you're interested in participating during the 2008 campaign season, now's the time to join the committee! We meet monthly to act as advocates for conservation through political action. MAY 21 (WED) 6:30 p.m. Wildlife Committee meeting. Help plan fun wildlife outings, learn about wildlife research and agency policies, and meet great folks who share your concern for Arizona's critters. Meet at the Sierra Club office at 202 E. MAY 27 and JUN 24 (TUE) 6 p.m. Energy Committee meeting. Discuss various energy activities, including Cool Cities and renewable energy campaigns nationally and locally. Everyone is invited to participate, no matter how much or how little you know about energy issues. Location: 202 E. JUN 1 (SUN). Copy deadline for July/August Canyon Echo. Theme is “Your Arizona,” looking at personal impact on the environment. Articles, art, photographs, poetry, essays, and brief epiphanies are welcome. JUN 25 (WED) 2-7 p.m. (stop by anytime) Canyon Echo Mailing Party. Club volunteers save the Chapter thousands of dollars every year by preparing the Canyon Echo for mailing. Thank you! The job is easy to learn and takes only a few hours once every two months. We all have a great time. Any amount of time that you're available is appreciated. MAY 13 and JUN 10 (TUE) 6:30 p.m. Conservation Committee meeting. MAY 20 (TUE) 6:30 p.m. Bobcat: Master of Survival. Join Kevin Hansen for this exciting program that tells the story of the most adaptable and resilient wild feline in North America. In the face of their enduring success, bobcats are still the most exploited wild feline in the world. After the program, learn what you can do to help Arizona’s wildlife. Kevin Hansen has worked as a wildlife biologist, park ranger, and writer throughout the U.S. Copies of his book will also be available for purchase. This program is sponsored by the Sierra Club, Animal Defense League of Arizona, and the Arizona Zoological Society. Located at The Phoenix Zoo, 455 N. Galvin Pkwy, Phoenix. JUN 17 (TUE) 6:30 p.m. Promoting a Greener Arizona, a Brighter Future, a Cooler Planet. Join us to hear from Sandy Bahr, Conservation Outreach Director for the Chapter, regarding how conservation faired in the 2008 legislative session, if we limited greenhouse gas emissions, how your legislators voted, and how we can all do more to help promote environmentally-friendly policies. Rincon Group (Tucson and surrounding area)

Monthly Rincon Group programs will now be held at the Northwest Neighborhood Center located at 2160 N. 6th Ave., just south of Grant Rd. next to Mansfield Park. These programs are held on the second Thursday of every month (excluding July and August). Please join us for another season of informative programs detailing conservation issues at the local, state, and national level! MAY 8 (THU) 7 p.m. Stop the Rosemont Mine. Save the Scenic Santa Ritas is a non-profit organization that works to protect our area from environmental degradation caused by mining and mineral exploration activities. Find out more about these efforts and how you can help by attending what promises to be an informative program.

JUN 12 (THU) 7 p.m. Coronado Forest Management Planning. In 2005, Coronado National Forest and the Bureau of Land Management began creating new site-based plans that will guide forest and grassland management for the next 20 years or more. This process presents a tremendous opportunity for coalitions of concerned citizens and scientists to work in partnership with federal agencies so that plans strike a balance between protection of diversity and resource use. Come hear more about protecting our National Forests at this presentation given by a Sky Island Representative.

Plateau Group (Flagstaff and surrounding area)

Enjoy large-screen viewing of these short documentaries: Matamoros: The Human Face of Globalization; Finding Balance: Forests and Family Planning in Madagascar; and This Land is Your Land: National Forest Management. MAY 8 (THU) 6:30–8:30 p.m. What is Permaculture? Learn how permaculture design can meet human needs by turning human gardens and communities into fully functioning ecosystems. Speaker: Lisa Rayner, permaculture expert and author of the books Growing Food in the Southwest Mountains and The Sunny Side of Cooking solar cookbook.
