Rincon Group (Tucson and surrounding area)

All programs are at Volunteer Center of Southern Arizona, 924 N. Alvernon Way, on the second Thursday of each month, at 7 p.m.

OCT 8 (TUE) 7 p.m. Energy Policy. Cathy Kay will employ a slide presentation to talk about the potential impacts of Section 369 of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which promotes activities leading to the leasing and development of oil-shale and tar-sands mining and processing, primarily on public lands in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. This is a very water-intensive industry and whether surface water or ground water is used, the intensive water use will negatively impact tributaries to the Colorado River with several dangerous direct and indirect ramifications. Coal-fired plants, emitting into the ambient air and atmosphere greenhouse gases and toxins, are used in oil-shale and tar-sands processing as well.

NOV 12 (TUE) 7 p.m. Adventure Outings. Rincon Group Outings Chairman Mitch Stevens will deliver a visual and verbal presentation on adventure outings in the Desert Southwest. The photos will delight viewers as they showcase the wonderfully remote canyons, mountains and hidden nooks and crannies that are within reach of local hikers with knowledgeable guides. Some of these jewels can be reached relatively easily, others require more rigorous hikes. Mitch will encourage questions about the Rincon Group Outings Program.

Barbara Eubanks, Western Regional Organizer of the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, will deliver a slideshow and presentation on the efforts of her organization to preserve and enhance the wild wonders just beyond Arizona’s northern border in Southern Utah. The Yavapai Group is proud to announce the three winners of our SAVE THE VERDE verse by the side of the road (BurmaShave style) contest:

Fish gotta swim
Birds gotta fly
Use water wisely
Or the river
will die
SAVE THE VERDE –Doris Cellarius

Where fish swim
And eagles fly
We cannot allow
The river to die
So take the vow

SAVE THE VERDE –Edna Moglewer

The cities all say
Trust us today
When the river
runs dry
All we can do
Is cry,
We knew
SAVE THE VERDE –Tom Slaback

Congratulations. The winners will each receive a one-year renewal Sierra Club membership. These verses will be reproduced as original BermaShave type signs and placed along highways 69, 89, and 89A.
