Threats to the existence and protection of Ironwood Forest National Monument - Ironwood Forest is threatened by off-road vehicle use, mining, planned power plants and power lines, and proposed boundary changes.  ASARCO, a copper mining company, has asked that over 400 acres be removed from the monument.  This acreage is a prime birthing area for the last viable population of desert bighorn sheep in Pima County.  ASARCO would be able to expand their mining operations if these lands are removed from the monument.  State Land Commissioner Mike Anable has asked the Department of the Interior for boundary changes in the monument.  A proposed powerline project, Arizona-Sonora Interconnect, may be located along the monument boundaries.
