Energy:
homeowners’ associations; sun screens

Our Position: support
Bill Number: HB2141
Sponsor: Ch. Campbell, Meyer, Sinema, et al
Legislative Session: 2009 Legislative Session

It prohibits homeowners’ associations and condo associations from preventing the installation or use of solar screens or shade structures that are intended to act as an energy saving device.  This will make it easier for homeowners to make their homes more energy efficient.  The definition of shade structure was narrowed a bit in the floor amendment.  It is still a good bill that we support.

Status

07/03/09 - It was never third read in the House, so is dead for the session.

Background

For far too long Homeowners Associtiation (HOAs) have used arbitrary restrictions to prevent homeowners from installing energy saving measures.  Arizona ought to be leading the way on energy efficiency and the use of solar energy.  Greater energy efficiency will lead to greater energy independence, fewer polluting power plants, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and cleaner air for our communities.
