  • November 9, 2001, GOVERNOR HULL IS THREATENING THE HERITAGE FUND, PLEASE ACT NOW TO PROTECT ARIZONA'S WILDLIFE AND PARKS. Governor Hull's budget proposal would basically zero out dollars to the Heritage Fund in the next two fiscal years. Please call the Governor and your Legislators today and ask them to leave the Heritage Fund alone and to oppose any efforts to divert these important dollars. Please ask the governor to drop this plan to raid the Heritage Fund.   • November 1, 2001, Please help protect Ironwood Forest National Monument! Ask the Arizona Power Plant and Transmission Line Siting Committee to deny approval of the Toltec Power Station. The Toltec Power Station will be located in a flat basin surrounded on two sides by Ironwood Forest National Park and on a third side by Picacho Peak State Park. Three huge 600 MW natural gas-fired units are planned. Six smoke stacks will tower 175 feet above the surrounding landscape. More info and sample letter...

    Prairie dogs are key to the health of many ecosystems including some of Arizona's grassland communities. Without prairie dogs, the health and biodiversity of these grassland areas are significantly threatened. Burrowing and grazing activities by prairie dogs enhance plant diversity and productivity and increase the nutritive value of plants for other grazing animals.   • 08-09-01, Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton and Arizona Senator Jon Kyl Turn Flagstaff Public Event Into Private Exclusive Party
    Nearly 100 Flagstaff residents, including environmentalists, the local 4-H Club, Forest Service employees, elected city and county officials, and members of the Navajo and Hopi tribes, took time off from work and assembled at the Gus Pearson Natural Area to attend a public news conference. As all these folks stood patiently in the rain, waiting for Norton and Kyl to make their promised appearance, the news conference was conducted secretly just a few hundred yards down the road, in an area restricted to media and "dignitaries."     The results of a statewide poll demonstrating broad public support for the five new Bureau of Land Management national monuments in Arizona will be released at a news conference by five environmental groups. The poll was sponsored by the Sierra Club, Republicans for Environmental Protection, the Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection, The Wilderness Society and the Land and Water Fund of the Rockies.     ACTION ALERT: 07-27-01, SAVE THE BIG SANDY RIVER! Caithness Big Sandy, L.L.C. (yes, another limited liability company) is proposing to build the Big Sandy Energy Project, a 750-megawatt gas fired power plant. The proposed location for the facility is about 4 miles southeast of Wikieup, about 2 miles east of where Highway 93 crosses the Big Sandy River. The project includes the power plant and associated facilities, a 500kV substation with transmission lines, a water supply system including a field of deep groundwater wells, a natural gas supply pipeline, and development of land for agricultural purposes.   • ACTION ALERT: 07-26-01, STOP POWER LINE CONSTRUCTION IN YOUR NATIONAL FORESTS! Tucson Electric Power (TEP) is proposing to run a new huge electric transmission line through the Coronado National Forest -- your national forest. The TEP proposal involves construction of a 345kv line that would run from the Sahuarita substation 60 miles to the Mexican border via the west side of the Tumacacori Mountains, north to south through 28 miles of the Coronado National Forest to the Ruby Road, and east toward Nogales along the northern boundary of the Sycamore Canyon/Pajarita Wilderness. TEP's alternative route would go down the east side of the Tumacacoris using the El Paso Gas pipeline easement through 14 miles of Coronado National Forest.   • 07-17-01, PLEASE ACT IMMEDIATELY TO STOP ILL-CONCEIVED MOUNTAIN LION EXPERIMENT The Arizona Game and Fish Department (Department) is proposing to kill 12 to 36 mountain lions in the next three years as part to of an unnecessary, wasteful and scientifically questionable experiment intended to assess the impact of mountain lion removal on a reintroduced population of desert bighorn sheep on the Tonto National Forest near Saguaro, Apache, and Canyon lakes.   • ARCTIC NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE SLIDESHOW AND GWICH'IN SPEAKER COMING TO PHOENIX The "Last Great Wilderness Project" will be presented by Lenny Kohm and is a superb slide presentation about the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the last great American frontier. In addition, Ms. Sandra Newman, a member of the Gwich'in Nation will talk about the potential impact of oil development on the Gwich'in peoples traditional way of life.

    These two riveting programs will be presented back to back at Trinity Cathedral on July 5th, from 7p.m.-9p.m. and will be followed by a FREE Ice Cream social.

    We need your help today to let our elected officials know we support this monument. Representative Jim Kolbe (AZ District 5) is planning to visit Ironwood this month with representatives from ASARCO mining company. ASARCO has apparently asked that the monument be carved up into four pieces so they can access copper deposits within it. WE CANNOT LET THIS HAPPEN! More alert and contact info...
