Colorado River Management Plan Update
Before the February 1st
deadline for comments on the Colorado River Management Plan Draft
Environmental Impact Statement, the Chapter
reached out to members and media all over the country with our
message: the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park
deserves the highest possible protection for its outstanding natural
resources and wilderness character. Many thanks to all who attended
the open houses in Phoenix and Flagstaff and who wrote comments
in support of the Canyon! At last count, the Park Service had received
over 18,000 comments on this important issue.
The Grand Canyon Chapter
submitted a 72-page comment letter in support of our position.
We hope that our letter, and all the comments
received from our members, will guide the Park Service away from
the destruction threatened by their Preferred Alternative H and
towards an improved Alternative B that is consistent with their
mandate in the Organic Act: „to conserve the scenery and
the natural and historic objects and the wild life [sic] therein
and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and
by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of
future generations.

 The Grand
Canyon Chapter was founded during a successful campaign to protect
the Grand Canyon from two dams, one that would have flooded the
eastern park and one that would have backed up to Mooney Falls
in Havasupai Canyon. As a way to thank our founders and activists
please write a letter to protect the wilderness character of the
Grand Canyon National Park.
